Poundstretcher is delighted to announce the opening of its latest store in Durham.
The popular discount retailer has taken over the former Bargain Buys unit on the Dragonville Retail Park in the city. The store officially opened its doors today, with the first 100 customers through the door receiving free goody bags from the team.

The Durham opening strengthens Poundstretcher’s presence across the region, complementing existing stores in Bishop Auckland, Hexham, Middlesbrough, Redcar, and Stanley. To celebrate the launch, staff were joined by the Mayor of Durham, Councillor Gary Hutchinson, for a special opening ceremony.
The new Durham store offers customers a wide range of great-value branded and non-branded products, including Clothing, DIY, Gardening, Health & Beauty, Home Décor, Snacks, Storage, and Sweets & Drinks. It will also feature the popular Pet Hut, offering hundreds of discounted essentials for pets of all shapes and sizes.

Commenting on the expansion, Andy Atkinson, Chief Executive Officer of Poundstretcher, said: “Consumers are still finding things difficult, which is why we are committed to bringing Poundstretcher closer to even more customers. This ensures even more communities can benefit from our great quality branded and non-branded products at market-leading prices.”

Founded in 1981, Poundstretcher was acquired by Fortress Investment Group in April 2024. Since then, the business has continued to grow, opening new stores across the UK including Banbury, Bognor Regis, Hinckley, Kimberley, Leicester, Portsmouth, Shepherd’s Bush, Strood, Sutton-in-Ashfield, and Truro, creating over 100 new jobs along the way.
